Mitr Phol Group promotes Modern Water Management through the “4Rs Model”
More Than Just Conservation — A Systemic Approach to Building Climate Resilience
in Agriculture
As climate change intensifies, seasonal patterns have become increasingly erratic, leading to more frequent and severe droughts and floods, as well as rising temperatures. Meanwhile, global water demand continues to grow — driven by population increases and rising consumption — placing mounting pressure on already limited water resources. “Water” is rapidly becoming a critical risk to both human well-being and economic stability. Recognizing the urgency of this challenge, the United Nations has designated June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought to raise global awareness and promote collective action to protect the environment and natural resources.
Sustainable water management is no longer a choice, but a shared responsibility. As a global sustainability leader in the food production industry, recognized by S&P Global, and a key player in Thailand’s sugarcane and sugar sector, “Mitr Phol Group” is promoting sustainable water resource management in agriculture. The Group focuses on a holistic approach that spans developing efficient irrigation systems for agriculture, transferring water-use technologies to farmers to enhance yields and lower production costs, and improving water-use efficiency in its manufacturing processes to reduce overall consumption. These efforts are guided by Mitr Phol’s 4Rs Integrated Water Management Model: Resource, Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce.
Mr. Buntoeng Vongkusolkit, Chairman of Mitr Phol Group, stated: “Our 4Rs water management model is a thoughtfully designed, comprehensive approach that addresses every dimension of sustainable water use throughout Mitr Phol Group’s operations. We are not simply aiming to use less water, but we are also strategically planning how every drop can be maximized for value and managed efficiently across our factories, communities, and sugarcane fields. As a key driver of Thailand’s agricultural sector, we see our role as more than just a business operator. We view ourselves as responsible members of society, committed to the belief that water is the cornerstone of human well-being, economic resilience, and environmental health. That is why we take a holistic, end-to-end approach to water management — ensuring long-term sustainability and delivering meaningful benefits to communities, farmers, and Thai society as a whole.”
The 4Rs Water Management Model in Action:
Resource – Securing Sustainable Water Sources Under this pillar, Mitr Phol has launched the “Mitr Phol Oasis” initiative, the development of large-scale agricultural water reservoirs located in frequently affected by flooding lowland areas. These reservoirs can store over 1 million cubic meters of water, capturing excess rainfall during the wet season and preserving it for use in the dry season. This strategic water reserve supports both agricultural productivity and daily needs, helping reduce the risks of drought during dry periods and floods during heavy rains. Due to their size, these reservoirs offer significantly greater capacity than conventional farm ponds. Beyond water storage, the Mitr Phol Oasis functions as a demonstration site for modern agricultural practices and integrated water management, aligned with the “Mitr Phol ModernFarm” model. Key features include: IoT-enabled water management systems, e.g., automated drip irrigation combined with fertigation systems and soil moisture sensors to prevent overwatering, construction of buffer ponds, community-based farmer groups that coordinate water usage schedules, and solar-powered water pumps, enabling eco-friendly water distribution to sugarcane fields — significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Currently, the “Mitr Phol Oasis” initiative encompasses four major projects, located in Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Suphanburi, and Kalasin provinces, covering a total beneficiary area of over 22,000 rai. These projects have proven instrumental in helping farmers adapt to drought conditions, while also enhancing productivity and generating additional income of 3,000–6,000 baht per rai. The initiative not only strengthens livelihood security for local farmers but also injects vitality into rural economies by creating jobs and stimulating local employment. Moreover, the projects have contributed to reducing water usage by 1,040 cubic meters per rai per year, translating into annual cost savings of up to 3,500 baht per rai.
Reuse –Recapturing Water from Sugarcane for Circular Use Through advanced process innovation, Mitr Phol reuses water naturally present in sugarcane, which is composed of approximately 60% water. During sugar production, this water is extracted, condensed into hot water, cooled, and then recirculated throughout the factory.
Recycle – Treating and Reutilizing Water Sustainably Mitr Phol employs state-of-the-art,
eco-friendly water treatment systems that allow the factory to recycle up to 3,000 cubic meters on average of water per day. This helps lower the factory’s overall water footprint.
Reduce – Optimizing Water Use at Every Step Mitr Phol reduces water usage at the source by deploying automated drip irrigation systems in sugarcane fields, integrated with real-time soil moisture monitoring. At the industrial level, the Group has developed and implemented advanced technologies and innovations across its production processes to continually enhance operational efficiency. These efforts have resulted in significant reductions in water consumption.
Sustainable water management requires active collaboration across all sectors. It begins with a mindset that both “recognizes the intrinsic value of water” and commits to “using every drop wisely.” Mitr Phol’s 4Rs model — Resource, Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce — represents a holistic and forward-thinking approach to long-term water stewardship. This commitment reflects the Group’s role in addressing the global water crisis and contributing meaningfully to the fight against climate change, aligning with and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
